MAKE YOUR STUDENTS LAUGH BEFORE, WHILE AND AFTER YOU MAKE THEM LEARN!
Believing that laughter may still be the best medicine for the busy English teacher this workshop will focus on the lighter side of ELT. We will look at the greatest learning facilitator – humour - and ways of bringing more and more of it into your English classroom. You too can do it and that's no joke! Even if you think you've had a sense of humour bypass! This is all in the name of the following motto: Education is too important to be taken seriously.
Areas to be covered:
- What is humour all about? How do I know I'm being humorous?
- It's not just jokes! Kinds of humour and ways we can use them in our classrooms.
- Why do it? The benefits of using humour. A review of some lame excuses for not using humour.
- What's your humour style?
- All right, but where do I find appropriate humour? The teacher as a researcher/collector of humour.
- How to jazz up not botch up your lessons - a guide to what's funny and what's not.
- But does humour enhance our effectiveness as teachers? Does a laugh a day keep all discipline problems and boredom away?
- Lots of examples of real humour: stories, signs, headlines, anecdotes, quotations, cartoons, movies, pranks, books, articles, mistranslations, mistakes, bits of the best stand-up comedians as well as ready-to-use activities for classroom use. In one word: good, clean fun! It's exciting and it's legal!
- Come to this workshop – you may overhaul your teaching style and have a laugh or two in the process. Experience the healing power of the funny side of teaching English. I kid you not!

The Mac Daddy Will Make Ya! Jump, Jump! Bożena Teleszewska, Homeschool
Hyperactive students onboard? Teachers’ nightmare the moment they enter the classroom - moving around and having difficulty to sit at their desks for more than five minutes, tapping their pens and fidgeting with their hands. Take it easy – these are kinesthetic learners – Homo sapiens with a head, two upper and lower limbs, and a pair of eyes. They feed with crisps, coke and will eagerly accept chicken nuggets.
The workshop provides a practical manual of looking after younger and older kinesthetic individuals. Table of contents:
- Are they really being difficult or do they just study differently?
- Does realizing kinesthetic students nature, the way they think, feel and behave, boost their chances of becoming successful learners?
- What sort of tricks, activities and techniques make kinesthetic learners flourish?
- Can a classroom change itself into a comfortable zone at the click of a finger?
- Does classroom magic really exist? Is a chair just a chair?
- And finally – if you can’t beat your enemy, join them – a guideline of becoming a kinesthetic teacher.

Whether we like it or not, we simply cannot speak without pronouncing. Can we teach English without teaching how to pronounce it, though? Particularly when we simultaneously try to control a bunch of very lively kids...
Well, that's exactly the point of this session. I will make a attempt to persuade you that pronunciation is good – both for you (as a great class management tool) and for your young learners (as a truly great motivator).
And, the sooner you accept that 'pron' needs to happen every time one of your learners opens their mouth, the sooner you'll start noticing opportunities to work on it absolutely everywhere, on every page of your coursebook, in every lesson, and definitely with any oral activity you orchestrate.
My other main point is that it takes very little extra time to do meaningful pronunciation work with kids – it's mostly about not wasting opportunity! And it's going to make a huge difference to you and your students provided it's done in very small but very frequent chunks. Sounds are everywhere, sounds are helpful, sounds are crucial. Sounds good?

Making errors is not only impossible to avoid but it is also a crucial element in the process of learning a language. Through errors and hearing the correct forms our students are able to understand how English works. At the same time the very idea of error correction remains controversial and raises many questions. How can we find balance between accuracy and fluency? How to promote communicative approach and yet encourage proper grammatical and lexical forms? How to motivate our students to speak and write correctly and not put them off learning altogether? Which techniques should we apply to correct effectively, quickly and painlessly? Can error correction activities become student and teacher friendly elements of learning English?
During my session I will try to answer these questions showing a variety of activities that can be employed in the English classroom to correct and improve students' speaking and writing skills.
